Land Acknowledgment
We acknowledge that the University of Virginia was built by enslaved laborers, on the land of the Monacan tribe of the Siouan Indians, and that enslaved Black people provided the labor and capital that supported the students and faculty through the Civil War. We recognize those ancestors of the Iroquoian, Siouan and Algonquin peoples who inhabited these lands first, as well as their modern day descendants who live and work in Virgina today, whose continued presence is important to our future.
